There are many attempts to do this<\/span>\u00a0and here is my shot at it after more than 20 years of working with executives from around the world<\/span>\u00a0and 30 years of living in a country in which I was not born<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Global Mindset<\/span>\u00a0for leaders means<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

The ability to achieve results with people from\u00a0different cultures\u00a0without anyone feeling\u00a0misunderstood and disrespected.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

That sounds quite\u00a0<\/span>simple,<\/span>\u00a0but it is certainly not easy<\/span>. I<\/span>n\u00a0<\/span>fact,<\/span>\u00a0it requires a set of deep insights about\u00a0<\/span>oneself and one\u00b4s own culture and\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>openness to enquire into what is<\/span>\u00a0the \u201cright way\u201d to do things.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Last year on business trip to Japan<\/span>, I sat with a table of 20 executives from a global company enjoying a formal\u00a0<\/span>and traditional\u00a0<\/span>Japanese<\/span>\u00a0dinner.\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>aitresses in beautiful Kimonos were serving\u00a0<\/span>drinks<\/span>. They\u00a0<\/span>were asking<\/span>\u00a0each person individually what they wanted to drink, then leav<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0the room to return\u00a0<\/span>with one bottle of beer and one glass and bring that to the<\/span>ir guest at the<\/span>\u00a0table<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Some\u00a0<\/span>European\u00a0<\/span>colleagues began to question this (perhaps with pictures of\u00a0<\/span>the Oktoberfest in the back of their minds<\/span>), it was\u00a0<\/span>quite a slow process<\/span>\u2026\u00a0<\/span>the guys were thirsty<\/span>\u2026\u00a0<\/span>couldn\u00b4t they take two beers at a time<\/span>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>perhaps\u00a0<\/span>use a tray<\/span>?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The comments make<\/span>\u00a0sense from\u00a0<\/span>European perspective\u00a0<\/span>if you value efficiency<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>but then one of our Japanese hosts kindly explained what was behind this<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>The hosts<\/span>\u00a0wanted us to have the feeling that the service was very\u00a0<\/span>individual, each person<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s request was being taken care of individual and personally.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

How easy it is to judge quickly from a set of values that are inherited\u00a0<\/span>unconsciously<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0simply by living\u00a0<\/span>(and particularly growing up)\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0country<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Acts that seem strange or stupid to us make complete sense\u00a0<\/span>if you understand the values that are driving them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This is the kind of deep insight that I mean<\/span>\u00a0with Global Mindset<\/span>: understanding that\u00a0<\/span>we all inherit a set o<\/span>f values unconsciously and that these determine the way that we\u00a0<\/span>give meaning to\u00a0<\/span>our experiences.<\/span>\u00a0They also determine the way we give meaning to\u00a0<\/span>language<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>even\u00a0<\/span>to silence<\/span>\u00a0– i<\/span>n a Japanese business\u00a0<\/span>meeting,<\/span>\u00a0you have to learn to \u201cread the air<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0as<\/span>\u00a0I was told by a senior Chinese manager who had worked in Japan for\u00a0<\/span>many\u00a0<\/span>years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Normally this kind of insight comes when you live\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>work\u00a0<\/span>for a longer\u00a0<\/span>period<\/span>\u00a0in a different\u00a0<\/span>culture,<\/span>\u00a0but I also think it can be seeded with the right kind\u00a0<\/span>of learning and development measures<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In my view<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0t<\/span>here are also some basics that\u00a0<\/span>are the foundation<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>diplomacy and intercultural empathy<\/span>\u00a0which everyone can practise<\/span>: being polite, asking<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>questions<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>listening carefully<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and not assuming that\u00a0<\/span>people understand things in the same way\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>you meant\u00a0<\/span>them<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0Again, sounds simple but as most experienced leaders will tell you, not<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>easy in practise!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What\u00a0<\/span>practises\u00a0<\/span>or tools\u00a0<\/span>have you seen\u00a0<\/span>that really<\/span>\u00a0make a difference?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n
