I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fact,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0it requires a set of deep insights about\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oneself and one\u00b4s own culture and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">openness to enquire into what is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the \u201cright way\u201d to do things.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Last year on business trip to Japan<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, I sat with a table of 20 executives from a global company enjoying a formal\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and traditional\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Japanese<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0dinner.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">aitresses in beautiful Kimonos were serving\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">drinks<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. They\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">were asking<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0each person individually what they wanted to drink, then leav<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the room to return\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with one bottle of beer and one glass and bring that to the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ir guest at the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0table<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Some\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">European\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">colleagues began to question this (perhaps with pictures of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the Oktoberfest in the back of their minds<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">), it was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">quite a slow process<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2026\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the guys were thirsty<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2026\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">couldn\u00b4t they take two beers at a time<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">perhaps\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">use a tray<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The comments make<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0sense from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">European perspective\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">if you value efficiency<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">but then one of our Japanese hosts kindly explained what was behind this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The hosts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0wanted us to have the feeling that the service was very\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">individual, each person<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s request was being taken care of individual and personally.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How easy it is to judge quickly from a set of values that are inherited\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unconsciously<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0simply by living\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(and particularly growing up)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0country<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Acts that seem strange or stupid to us make complete sense\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">if you understand the values that are driving them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is the kind of deep insight that I mean<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with Global Mindset<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: understanding that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">we all inherit a set o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f values unconsciously and that these determine the way that we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">give meaning to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our experiences.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0They also determine the way we give meaning to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">language<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">even\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to silence<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&#8211; i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n a Japanese business\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">meeting,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0you have to learn to \u201cread the air<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I was told by a senior Chinese manager who had worked in Japan for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">many\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">years.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Normally this kind of insight comes when you live\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">work\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for a longer\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">period<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in a different\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">culture,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but I also think it can be seeded with the right kind\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of learning and development measures<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In my view<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">here are also some basics that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are the foundation<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">diplomacy and intercultural empathy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0which everyone can practise<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: being polite, asking<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">questions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">listening carefully<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and not assuming that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people understand things in the same way\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">you meant\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">!<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Again, sounds simple but as most experienced leaders will tell you, not<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">easy in practise!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What do you think<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, what makes a truly Global Mindset?\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And even more challenging from an Organizational Development perspective<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">H<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ow do you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">encourage or develop a Global Mindset in a company that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">doesn\u00b4t yet have it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">?
